About 2010 Census

The U.S. Census counts every resident in the United States, and is required by the Constitution to take place every 10 years. The 2010 Census will help communities receive more than $400 billion in federal funds each year for things like:

• Hospitals
• Job training centers
• Schools
• Senior centers
• Bridges, tunnels and other-public works projects
• Emergency services

The data collected by the census also help determine the number of seats your state has in the U.S. House of Representatives.

In March of 2010, census forms will be delivered to every residence in the United States and Puerto Rico. When you receive yours, just answer the 10 short questions and then mail the form back in the postage-paid envelope provided. If you don't mail the form back, you may receive a visit from a census taker, who will ask you the questions from the form. The best way to ensure your privacy is to fill out the questionnaire and mail it back.

The majority of the country will receive English-only materials. Households in areas with high concentrations of Spanish-speaking residents may receive a bilingual (English/Spanish) form.

Any personal data you provide is protected under federal law.

The State of Ohio is partnering with the U.S. Census Bureau to organize and implement the decennial census advocacy and promotional campaign. Working together, Ohio's goal will be to have a complete count of Ohio residents on April 1, 2010. The Department of Development has been designated as Governor Strickland's Census Liaison agency to the Census Bureau.

In an effort to support the U.S. Census Bureau, the Governor established by Executive Order an Ohio Complete Count Committee, chaired by Treasurer of State Kevin L. Boyce. The purpose of the Committee is to facilitate census education and participation.

The Local Census Office (LCO) Staffing Operation supports the major 2010 Census field operations. The LCO Staffing Operation does all of the following:

• Recruits, hires and releases office and field staff;
• Performs supervisory and non-supervisory functions for office activities and field operations;
• Distributes training and procedural manuals for office staff; and
• Trains employees and office staff for the field operations performed at the LCO.

The LCO also manages and troubleshoots field and office automation systems and problems and incorporates Quality Assurance into all its activities.

The Census Bureau will work with tribal, state and local governments, as well as community organizations, to form Complete Count Committees around the country.

Complete Count Committees exist to plan and implement locally-based outreach campaigns that raise awareness of the census and ultimately drive participation. Complete Count Committees can achieve this goal through grassroots outreach efforts that promote the importance and benefits of responding to the census. One of the key reasons Complete Count Committees are effective in raising awareness is because of the members’ knowledge and understanding of what it takes to engage and inspire others to take action.

The Census Bureau Partnership Specialists will serve as technical advisors and information resources for all Complete Count Committees; the daily management responsibilities rest solely with the highest elected official or community leader in charge.

The goal in 2010 is to achieve 10,000 Complete Count Committees that are well-organized, highly productive and have quality outreach strategies in place. This allows Partnership staff to provide more effective support to Complete Count Committees.

Ohio has three Team Leaders that coordinate efforts of the Partnership Program within the state. Contact the Team Leader for your region to become involved!
